Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes are granted the option to contest certain decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
