Greek Police Strengthen Protection In Response to Protests Against Israel Cruise Ship

Hellenic authorities have significantly increased security measures at multiple major ports in an effort to keep demonstrators from targeting a cruise liner carrying visitors from Israel on an eleven-day Mediterranean journey.

Recent Demonstrations Trigger Increased Protection

The security reinforcement at Patras and Katakolo came after earlier rallies when the MS Crown Iris arrived in Kalamata earlier this week. Earlier, passengers aboard the same vessel were prevented from disembarking and the liner was compelled to change course to Cyprus after local residents organized demonstrations on the Aegean isle of Syros.

"Despite the ceasefire, Israel is still continuing its attacks in Gaza," remarked a schoolteacher who joined the Kalamata demonstration. "Civilian, unarmed people are being fatally injured."

Passenger Experience and Popular Sentiment

Aboard the ship, passengers watched as demonstrators in Kalamata shouted: "You require the police, you're not wanted in Greece."

A leading campaigner, who dedicated the summer to coordinating anti-war protests across Greece, declared: "Citizens of Israel who approve of the policies of their government aren't welcome here."

Geopolitical Context and Foreign Ties

Constantine Filis explained: "Owing to close location and our historical connections with the Arab world, the average Greek is more sensitive to what is happening in Gaza than the average citizen of central or northern Europe."

"Greece is in a difficult position," he continued. "The State of Israel is much more important for us as an ally than it is for the majority of European countries."

Economic and Tourism Implications

Official data reveal that in excess of 600,000 Israeli travelers came to Greece in 2024, with forecasts of even higher numbers this year. This significant arrival underscores the much-improved relationship between the two countries since the 1980s, when Greek leadership maintained a firmly pro-Palestinian policy.

Tactical Partnership and Geographic Factors

From Athens' perspective, Israel serves as not only a significant counterbalance to geopolitical adversary Turkey but also grants the added benefit of enhanced political entry to Washington.

"Greece is not going to risk its relations with Israel," commented the expert. "However from a compassionate viewpoint we must be more inclusive, more measured, more committed to show the wrongdoings of Israel in Gaza."

Growing Demonstration Campaign and Global Response

The magnitude of the Greek protest movement has caught Israel off guard. Lately, the state's external affairs office advised visitors to remain inconspicuous, while national news outlets referred to Athens as a "lost paradise" due to anti-Israeli graffiti emerging on edifices in the downtown area.

The head official of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece voiced worry: "Naturally we're worried. The type of language we're experiencing can so easily become prejudiced."

Upcoming Events and Demands

Progressively, protesters have aimed at Athens' tight relationships with Israel. Up to 5,000 people lately went to Crete to call for the shutdown of the Souda Bay naval installation, a NATO base that following the start of hostilities in Gaza has served as a important supply station for US naval vessels, combat aircraft and vessels bound for Israel.

"We have achieved successes," declared Petros Constantinou. "Our primary request, at present, is to cease all cooperation with Israel."
